Reggae Marathon Race Day!

It certainly was an early rise this morning to grab a quick cup of coffee, wolf down some dry cereal before heading to the Reggae Marathon start line at Long Bay Beach Park.  And what a morning it was.  After a short warm-up, I had the chance for some last minute trash talk with Larry, Bob and Navin.  Dan was the voice of maturity…thanks Dan!

As usual there was loud Reggae Music to send us off.  And as usual after his brief words of encouragement, Frano sent us off promptly at 5:15 am with blazing torches lighting up the dark sky as we crossed the timing mat at the start line.

After that the first mile was a blurr as I ran with the pack slowly burning of the pre-race jitters and adrenaline. For stories from the finish line, check Sunday’s blog post.

Until next time…

Thanks to the organizers of this years Reggae Marathon! The vibes were good throughout..people cheering from the side lines, water and electrolytes at every kilometer, and the slow rising sun to greet the finishers of the 10k. Thanks for the coconut, out of the shell, and banana and oranges, cold wet face clothes and a special thanks for the free 10min. massage!!!!
The only downer was the smell of burning plastic and rotting garbage at intervals.
Again a big up to organizers!!!

By far this has been the best running event I’ve participated in! From beginning to end, the Reggae Marathon is filled with fun positive vibes! I will be back, and looking forward to 2012!!

This was my first time running a half marathon race and I’m happy I did it at the Reggae Marathon. Well organized and I hope to be back next year. Loved the starting time because you get off the road before it gets too hot. I would have appreciated more mile markers or did I miss some before mile 8?

Half-marathon with the best atmosphere I have ever run! It would have been nice to have every mile marker, and to rethink where to place the GU stations. To put one at mile 12 doesn’t help the half-marathoners as they have but 10 minutes left to run… and the GU takes about 15 minutes to enter the bloodstream. Maybe put the GU station at mile 6 or 7? Suggestion only…
Great job for such a great atmosphere. We could practically taste Jamaica since Friday night at the pasta party!

I enjoyed the race, but was disappointed with a couple of things. 1. Walkers should have been staged towards the back of the race. To start the race and try to run pass walkers was a little frustrating. 2. The shuttle situation was not cool. I didn’t think it was fair to runners to open up the streets to the shuttle before the race was over. At one point, there were several shuttles in the street and runners had to dodge and run around shuttles. Not good at all. I enjoyed Negril, but felt the 2 items above were not good race experiences.
