Reggae Marathon Race Director ‘Sir Frano’ on speed

It must be the yams! Yes, that’s the ‘Secret Ingredient’ responsible for the amazing speed of Jamaican Track Athletes.  And  it’s roast yams…OK, that’s what I like.

After the display of speed at the recently completed Olympic Games in London there has been a lot of conversation about our speedy runners.  And seriously, it has bee suggested that the Jamaican diet of yams and other Jamaican favourites contributes to the their performance.  Particularly in the sprint events.

Having grown up in Jamaica on boiled bananas, roast yam and bammie I had the carbo side of the diet well covered.  Add fresh fish and chicken for protein and the diet was complete.  But it goes beyond that.  In a recent interview, Reggae Marathon Race Director ‘Sir Frano’ gave a much more in-depth explanation of the unique combination of factors that have contributed to the Jamaican running successes. I’m not sure when he got the Knighthood but it has a nice ring to it don’t you agree?  Anyway, here’s his interview…

And it’s not just the sprinters who have benefited from the total ‘Jamaican Running Experience’.  In the Road Race Series run throughout the year all across Jamaica and that culminates with the Reggae Marathon each December watching and running with the High School runners is truly special.  Those kids run fast!  And you never know…you might be racing alongside the next Usain Bolt.
