|Reggae Marathon Grand Prix Road Race Begins In October|
Fitness enthusiasts who are now in training for the Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K in Negril on December 1, will be able to further improve their preparation by participating in the annual Burger King/Reggae Marathon Grand Prix Road Race Championships scheduled to start in Montego Bay in October.
The first race, the Burger King Montego Bay 7K, will begin at the Gloucester Avenue restaurant of the title sponsors at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, while the starters for the Burger King Portmore 10K will take their places at the restaurant’s Portmore location on Sunday, November 11 at 7:00 a.m.
The race director explained that this year’s runners will be competing for a total prize purse of $510,000. As is customary, entrants are encouraged to participate in both races. Cash awards will be made to the top three male and female overall with the first place finishers receiving $40,000 each. The first to third place finishers in the 20-60 and over age categories as well as those who take the top spots in the school championship category will also receive cash awards. Those participants who fall within the 10-19 age categories, however, “will be competing for trophies only.”
“We want to encourage the widest participation possible,” Francis said, “as we believe that these championships and the increasing popularity of road racing in Jamaica are not only raising awareness about the importance of running as part of a healthy lifestyle programme, but also promoting greater interest in long distance running. Our goal is to make long distance running an important part of Jamaica’s athletic programme and we believe that these races provide an opportunity for us to get closer to achieving that goal” he added.
Francis said that registration is now open for the “run / walk” events and interested persons can visit www.runningevents.com for further information.
