Grand Prix Road Race Series Re-branded

As long distance runners prepare for the start of the annual road racing season, the Jamdammer’s Running Club of Kingston, organizers of the Grand Prix Road Race Series and Reggae Marathon, has announced the rebranding of the Series. It will now be called the Burger King / Reggae Marathon Grand Prix Road Race Series.

This announcement was made by president of the Jamdammers Running Club, Emile Leiba, who has welcomed the ongoing partnership with the fast food giant. “The rebranding takes the Series to another level in positioning Reggae Marathon as the foremost long distance event in Jamaica and the Caribbean. We are very pleased that Burger King is continuing its partnership with us in such a meaningful way,” Leiba said.

The series which begins on October 10 with the Burger King 10K will see participants taking starters’ orders from the Burger King, Gloucester Avenue location in Montego Bay. It will then move to St. Elizabeth on November 7 for the National Health Fund Holland Bamboo 6K and culminate on November 14 in St. Catherine with the Burger King Portmore 10K.

Race director Alfred ‘Frano” Francis has also announced that this year cash prizes totaling J$160,000 will be awarded for each race with a final grand prix jackpot of J$360,000. Cash prizes will go to the overall male and female winners; male and female winners in categories ranging from age 20 – 60 and over; as well as the top five male and female school champions. Entrants in the categories ranging from age 10 – 19 will be awarded trophies only.

Francis said that as in previous years, “Points will be tallied at the end of the series to determine prize winners in the various categories.” He added, however, that runners are still required to “take part in at least three races in order to qualify for the prize purse.”

Previously known as the Burger King /Jamdammers Road to Reggae Marathon Series, the Burger King / Reggae Marathon Grand Prix Road Race Series will continue to provide an opportunity for athletes and healthy lifestyle enthusiasts to prepare for the Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in Negril on December 4 this year.
