Will spring ever arrive?

We’ve been following the weather this winter across North America and Canada.  From the Polar Vortex that had even Houston, Texas below freezing to the multiple feet of snow that fell in Toronto, and the entire North Eastern Seaboard there’s only one word to describe it:  “Enough already!”.  OK two words.  It’s been a tough winter and although Spring officially arrives in a week or so, running outside in shorts and T Shirt won’t be an option for many Reggae Marathon fans for a while.

So…a little inspiration and motivation to keep you running!

“That’s the funny thing about running. The deceptive thing about it. It may seem mindless, but it’s really largely mental. If the mind’s not strong, the body acts weak, even if it’s not. If the mind says it’s too cold or too rainy or too windy to run, the body will be more than happy to agree. If the mind says it would be better to rest or recover or cut practice, the body will be glad to oblige. “Wendelin Van Draanen, The Running Dream”.

People don’t understand why we run. That’s the funny thing about running. The deceptive thing about it. It may seem mindless, but it’s really largely mental. If the mind’s not strong, the body acts weak, even if it’s not. If the mind says it’s too cold or too rainy or too windy to run, the body will be more than happy to agree. We pretend the snooze button doesn’t exist. We drag our butts out of bed while others sleep. While others eat their pancakes, we feast on protein, glucose and electrolytes.  We double-knot. We run. 800s, Relays, 1500s, 5Ks, 10Ks, 26.2 miles. Some days more some days less. A honk on a run is a badge of honor. Makes us proud.  We run through the snow, hail, rain, sleet, thunder, lightning and sunshine. We feel like warriors. We get marked by each battle with beautiful frosty eyelashes and frazzled hair.   We pay no mind to comfort. On speed days. On Sundays. On holidays. We make excuses to keep going. Question ourselves. Play mind games. Put our hearts before our knees. We hit the wall, then bust through it. We finish what we start. Prove what we are made of. Day after day, we run our legs off and our hearts out.

Spring will arrive soon and with it better outdoor weather.  Then before you know it we’ll be talking about the summer heat.  Looking forward to it!

Until next time…
