Drink more when running in hot weather

There’s a theory floating around that not drinking while working out in hot weather will somehow make you stronger.  This is one of those theories that defies logic…and science as it turns out.

When running and working out in hot weather it is important to replace the fluids that you lose, especially electrolytes.  Here’s an article from the New York Times that illustrates what happens when you work out in the heat:  Why we all need to drink more during hot weather exercise.

Reggae Marathon runs in Negril, Jamaica.  Even in December (this year, Sunday, December 2), it’s hot in Negril.  Temperatures in the afternoon reach 30 Celsius and with the more intense sun, dehydration is important.  Reggae Marathon starts at 5:15 am in the morning when air temperatures are in the low 20’s Celsius.  That is definitely cooler than later in the day…that’s why we start early.  But it’s still significantly warmer than the locations farther north.

Before, during and after Reggae Marathon we have an excellent electrolyte replacement drink, Hi-Lyte.  Take advantage at each aid station on course and after once you collect your Finisher Medal.

And while we are on hydration, we have one more source of hydration and electrolyte replacement.  And it’s all natural.  Fresh cut coconuts.  High in potassium, coconuts have been in the news for the past couple of years.  Is coconut water better than sport drinks?  Here’s an article from Runner’s World that sheds some light on the discussion:  Is Coconut water better than sports drinks?

Take it from us.  Running and working out in hot weather demands attention to hydration.  Water, electrolytes or even coconut water…drink more when running in hot weather!

Until next time…
