Friendship born on the Beach

Friendship born on the beach from a chance meeting.

6 years ago Krista (from the US) and Elle (from England) met on the beach in Negril while on vacation. They stayed in touch once they went back home and developed a long-distance friendship.  This December they met up again in Negril and ran their first Reggae Marathon together!  Elle shared the story…

6 years ago I was on holiday staying at Rondel Village. Also there was Krista Boersma from Chicago on vacation by herself. We got to talking one morning over breakfast and that, as they say, was that. A great friendship was born. It must be noted that at this time, neither of us were runners.

2 years ago Krista took up running and had completed several races but not a full marathon. She set herself a challenge of completing a full marathon in 2014 (at the age of 43). She researched marathons and as soon as the Reggae Marathon popped up on the screen – BOOM! That was it. When she told me about her plans I knew I had to be there to support her. It all just fell into place, going back to the very place where our friendship was born. It didn’t take me long to decide that if I was going, I was going to run as well. I am 40, far from fit and had never ran before. Inspired by Krista, I donned my running shoes and started something I never thought possible, training for my first race ever, the 10K. I also ran in memory of my mum and raised almost 500 British Pounds for Arthritis Care UK.

On December 6th 2014, Krista and I completed both of our challenges and made our dreams come true crossing the finish line!

The entire experience was out of this world – so well organized from the packet pick up, pasta party, pre and post race entertainment. A highlight for both of us was running by moonlight – simply beautiful!

Great story Krista and Elle.  Thanks for sharing.  I’ve lost track of the number of friends I’ve made on the beach while in Negril for Reggae Marathon. A core group of 4 of us now have 18 shared Reggae Marathon events between us after Reggae Marathon 2014…and once we added in the new members, we had nearly 40.
The Reggae Marathon Experience:  Excellent race experience…vacationing…making friends!

Until next time…
