Jetola’s Reggae Marathon Experience

One of the really nice people that we met at last year’s Reggae Marathon was Jetola.  She was a dynamo even while lying on the beach!  She introduced us to many other runners and was the life of the party.  Oh, and she’s also a dedicated runner who has been challenging herself this year.

Jetola went to school in Mandeville and now lives in Houston, Texas.  She loves Reggae Marathon and shared her experience from last year:

It seems that no matter what I do, I can’t stop thinking about the Reggae Marathon and the awesome experience that it was. I hope everyone’s training is going well. It’s been really hot in Houston which is one of the reasons I can’t stop thinking about Reggae Marathon. I hope you have been training in warm weather because doing so is going to come in handy on race day. The 5:15 am start is awesome but the truth is as soon as the sun comes up it gets hot (Ed note:  wear a hat, stay hydrated at aid stations every mile).

The course is two loops. Pretend the course is a clock. You start at the 9, run down to the 6 and head back up to 12 and down back to 9. If you’re doing the half, you’re done when you get back to the 9. If you’re doing the full, you get to repeat. I finished the first lap a little after 7 o’clock and it was getting warm.  Whether you’re doing the full or the half, make sure you are hydrating every day and building up your strength and endurance.  I remember my friend telling me that if I could’t finish before 8 o’clock, be prepared for the heat.  It really helped that I was well hydrated.

One of the great things about the course is that they have water stops at EVERY mile marker. That helped a lot. They serve the water in little plastic pouches. You snip off the corner with your teeth and sip as you go without the cup splashing factor. You can hold on to the bag for as long as you like and always with the knowledge that you can get another one at the next mile marker. (Ed note:  Electrolyte is also available in pouches at each aid station).

Y’all are in for an amazing experience but preparation is the key to making sure that it is glitch free.

Thinking and wishing and hoping.

Thank you for sharing your experience Jetola.  We too are hoping that we’ll see you again soon.

Until next time…
