What do bananas and beer have in common?

Besides the fact that both bananas and beer start with the letter ‘B’, both of these along with a freshly cut coconut are all available the end of the Reggae Marathon.

The health and recovery benefits of bananas and coconut water are well documented.  Not so with beer.  In fact there is controversy around the benefits of consuming a beer after strenuous physical activity.

With beer there’s not that much empirical evidence on the consumption of beer after strenuous physical activity.  Without too much extensive research we found this study  from Granda University in Spain:

“A pint of beer post-workout or match is better at rehydrating the human body than water… the sugars, salts, and bubbles in a beer that may help people absorb fluids more quickly”.

This finding came from a study undertaken by Professor Manuel Garzon, a member of Granada’s medical faculty, working with 25 students over several months.

This is NOT to recommend or encourage the reckless consumption of alcohol after the Reggae Marathon.  That is definitely bad! But after the coconut water and bananas the cold Red Stripe beer ‘tastes oh so good!’

Remember to get the order right:  coconut water, banana, Red Stripe Beer!

Until next time…
