Kingston is the capital and largest city of Jamaica, located on the southeastern coast of the island. It faces a natural harbour, the seventh-largest natural harbour in the world, protected by the Palisadoes, a thin tombolo of sand. The Norman Manley International Airport and the historic town of Port Royal are both on the Palisadoes. The privateer, Henry Morgan, was buried in Palisadoes cemetery, which sank beneath the sea after the 1692 earthquake.
Kingston became the capital in 1692 and is now a lively city that blends history with modernity. The Bob Marley Museum, located in the city center, is in the reggae singer’s former home. Nearby, Devon House is a colonial-era mansion with period furnishings, and the Hope Botanical Gardens & Zoo highlights native flora and fauna. Northeast of the city, the Blue Mountains are a renowned coffee-growing region with trails and waterfalls.
