Beach Bum

Beach Bum

I’m a beach bum!  There’s nothing I love better than spending endless hours on the beach.  Lounging, swimming, walking in the surf.  If there is a better experience than spending days in a bathing suit frolicking in the sun on a white sand beach, I haven’t found it yet.  And 7 mile beach in Negril is one of the best beaches in the world to be a ‘world class beach bum’.

Every year when I get to Negril for Reggae Marathon (this year on Sunday, December 8) I loose the shoes, change into my bathing suit and head down to the beach barefoot.  Part of that ritual is running barefoot along the beach for a couple of kilometres.  No matter where you are on the beach strip, you can get in a solid beach run.  This is strictly a fun run:  I don’t push myself hard.  I just love splashing in the surf…in a moment I’m 12 years old again!

I think that’s what I love most about being a dyed-in-the wool beach bum…I can be a kid again.  I may not build sandcastles but being on the beach brings back those memories.

Sunscreen, hat, towel!  That’s all it takes to be a beach bum.  A cold Red Stripe handy is good too.

Over the years at Reggae Marathon (number 11 this December 8), I’ve met some great friends being a beach bum.  Runners make the best friends and being in Negril for Reggae Marathon takes it to even higher levels of friendship.  Friendships made at Reggae Marathon encompass time zones and countries…the world really does come to Reggae Marathon each year.

So if you see me on the beach this December stop by and say hi.  Perhaps we can be bums together!

Until next time…
