Engaged in Negril

Destination Weddings.  Big in Jamaica…very big in Negril.  Over the years we have many Reggae Marathons who make the annual return trip in December to celebrate their wedding.  This past weekend I attended the wedding for two Reggae Marathoners who got engaged on the beach in Negril after Reggae Marathon 2013.  It’s personal…and they agreed to share their story.  Please meet my Son and Daughter-in-Law.

Coconut Water Sweet!

My son is a pretty good runner.  Back in 2010 he and I ran the Reggae Marathon Half Marathon together. I wasn’t 100% for that race unfortunately suffering from Plantar Fasciitis.  After a good start, I slowed to a walk about 2 miles from the finish.  Good sun that he is, he stayed with me till the end and he and I crossed the Finish Line together.  Even with my grimace, it was special.   On Sunday afternoon he insisted we go shopping.  He was trying to be coy but we pulled it out of him:  It was a special gift for a girl.

Fast forward to Reggae Marathon 2013.  My son and his girlfriend at that time entered the Half Marathon and ran together.  She’s also a very good runner and they had a great time pacing each other through the race.  After the race, we all had a great time hanging out on the beach with other family who had made the trek from Kingston…it was a real family affair.  But unknown to us, something was brewing…

Engaged in Negril

I left Negril after Reggae Marathon that December with the same emotions I have every year:  Glowing with fresh memories of another great race weekend in Negril…already looking forward to the next Reggae Marathon in 2014. The kids stayed behind for a few more days on the beach and it’s after we had all left that he popped the question…on the beach at sunset!  Romantic guy…who knew!

I shared that story at the Wedding reception last Saturday.  As I told them though, now they’ll have to return to Reggae Marathon every December to celebrate their engagement anniversary.

Until next time…
