Preparing for a virtual race is a lot different than doing a race in person. This is particularly true if you are doing a longer distance such as a half marathon or a marathon. Knowing how you are going to hydrate is most important. Even if you live in a cooler environment, it is still necessary to drink water or have some sort of electrolyte drink available when you are running. This is true even if you are an elite runner or someone who likes to participate in local 5k races. When Shalane Flanagan ran her virtual Tokyo Marathon in Oregon, she had set hydration stations available for her race. Runners must not neglect their hydration and nutrition during their virtual race. Knowing where you will be able to get your drinks (if you don’t use a handheld) is important. Will you have access to a water fountain or can you go to the store to replenish.
