Half Marathon, 10K & 5K Races

Reggae Marathon: “The best race ever”

“The best race ever” was how one visitor to the Jamaica Tourist Board booth at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront marathon Expo described the Reggae Marathon.  Judy Nash from the JTB, Marguerite Orane, Suzie Forman and I had a great time talking with runners who stopped by the booth on Friday and Saturday.

One of the most frequent questions we got asked was about the heat.  Speaking for myself as a runner who completed the full Reggae Marathon last year, I can honestly say it is a factor. But it can be dealt with successfully.  First of all, you have three events to choose from:  the 10 K, the ½ half marathon and of course the full marathon. You still get to enjoy the vibe of Negril no matter which one you choose to run in.

Second, it starts early so you get to enjoy the cooler morning temperatures while minimizing the full impact of the sun.  Plus after you finish, you get to dive into the cooling Caribbean.

Third, respect the sun and the heat.  Seriously.  Plan to run a little slower, and take advantage of the bagged water and Gatorade at every mile marker.  My special tip:  press the cold, unopened bag of water on the back of your neck for a minute or so.  It really helps you cool down.

Fourth, enjoy the scenery.  You are running along the shoreline of the Caribbean in Negril, Jamaica!  You’re on vacation!  Does it get any better than that?

I’ve run in a lot of countries in many race events and obviously I am biased about the Reggae Marathon being the “Best race ever”.  The Brampton Benders who are pictured in the photo below may also agree.  They stopped by the JTB booth this past weekend to let us know they are coming to Jamaica this December to run as a group.  We plan to connect at the Pasta party Friday night.  It’s going to be a great time.  If you and your running group are coming to Negril this year, we’d love to hear from you.

Until next time…
