Half Marathon, 10K & 5K Races

Where in the world have you run?

Along with running the Reggae Marathon in Negril, running in other cities and countries around the world is high on my bucket list.  It always gets the butterflies churning in my stomach when I go out for my first run in a new city.  Here are some of my favorites:

  • Waikiki Beach, Hawaii.  Running from the congested hotel area of Central Waikiki Beach to Diamond Head takes you along a great beach strip and some spectacular homes.  It’s busy no matter the time of day but it is spectacular.
  • Coogee Beach in Sydney, Australia. While Bondi Beach is better known, just down the coast is Coogee Beach.  Same wide crescent of white sand and big waves but the trail from the beach takes in some spectacular cliff-side running overlooking the ocean.  Plus, it was very memorable getting to celebrate Christmas on-the-beach, Coogee-style.
  • Kowloon Park, Hong Kong.  Now for something completely different.  Hong Kong is incredibly dense, congested and noisy…24/7.  But on Kowloon-side, there’s a small green oasis called Kowloon Park.  On laps in and around the park you cross paths with many locals out for their morning walks.  Intense but still worth it.
  • Hyde Park, London.  I didn’t really run in the park but the laps on the roads around it take in some of the best of central London.  Plus one of the cross-park routes takes you past Kensington Palace.  Always nice to see one of the homes of the Royals.
  • Rome, Italy.  Running around the Vatican was … interesting.  Tough running surfaces with the cobblestones and busy even early in the morning.  But on the side streets around the Vatican the true life of urban Rome is on full display.
  • Stanley Park, Vancouver.  It’s almost a perfect 10 K run around the Seawall that encircles Stanley Park in Vancouver and at any time of day you’re competing for the ever changing views with runners, walkers and rollerbladers.  A definite run to add to your bucket list

There are still some places I haven’t run:  Athens and along the beaches in Los Angeles to name a couple.  But the journey’s not over yet…

What are your favorites?

Until next time…
