Don’t Forget the Rest Days!

Don’t Forget the Rest Days!

When training for long distance races, your rest days are just as important as the days you run and strength train. Rest days allow for your body to recover from the stress it endured during those hard runs. On your rest days, you can choose to do absolutely nothing, engage in strength training, or something easy on the body like a bike ride or a leisurely walk.

And while you need to take a rest day each week during your training cycle, don’t take too many during your training cycle. It’s recommended that you take no more than one to two rest days a week. Use that time to read a book, go to the movies, or enjoy a night out with minimal exertion.

The other time you should take a rest day (or days) during you training cycle is when you feel an injury or a nag. Take a day or two off to see it if feels better. Then try an easy run. If the nag is still bothering you , check in with a doctor or a physical therapist and see if further evaluation is needed.

Most of all, enjoy those days when you can sleep in a bit!
