Staying cool and hydrated at the Reggae Marathon

One of the biggest challenges running any marathon is to stay properly hydrated.  If you’re coming from the cooler climates of the northern USA, the UK or Europe, hydration is even more important.  I had the same concern last year before I ran my first Reggae Marathon and even though I read about the bagged water and Gatorade, I still over prepared.  Yes that’s me in the picture below carrying way too much water.

Camelback and water bottle!  Talk about over-the-top!  I won’t do that again at this year’s Reggae Marathon.

First of all remember that the early morning start keeps you out of the mid-day sun.  The picture above was taken around the 5 mile mark and the sun hasn’t broken the horizon yet.

And water and Gatorade are available at every mile along the route.  It’s a great system that has to be the best in the world:  plastic bags of cool liquid that are easy to rip open and drink from.  Later on after the sun came up I used them to stay cool by placing them on the back of my neck.  It worked.

We’re less than 30 days away now from the Reggae Marathon.  Sally and I get into Negril on Dec 1 and are looking forward to the first pre-race warm up run Thursday morning.  See you on the beach…and the road in December for the 10th anniversary of the Reggae Marathon.

Until next time…
