The Right Running Shoe Fit

How do you get the right fit for your running shoes?  You’re going to spend a lot of time basically destroying your running shoes.  A good fit is essential.  How do you get that right fit?
In the running shoe store that I frequent, the staff are super knowledgeable.  They are runners and can answer all my questions.  Plus they let me try on multiple pairs of shoes and run around the store to make sure I have the right fit.  This is the best start to your shoe shopping.  I always try on a new pair even if it is the exact same brand and model that I’m replacing.  I don’t want any expensive and uncomfortable experiences out on the road.
I try on my running shoes with a pair of running socks.  No bare feet, no dress socks and definitely no thick sports socks.  I want to be as close as possible to how I will actually run in them.
I also generally go up a 1/2 size from my usual shoe size.  I’m not sure of the physiology of feet impacting the ground repeatedly but that 1/2 size seems to work well for me.  Again, try on the shoes to make sure.
Online there are numerous resources that will help you get the right fit for your running shoes.  I especially like this one:
Take the time to get the right fit.  On a long run and especially in a race, it’s time well spent.
Until next time…
